catch up day 26 - make zippers less noisy

I don't have a picture right now, so I'll try to explain.  I have a jacket with two zippers on the front.  If they are unzipped (which they often are, because this jacket also has buttons on the front) they make a lot of noise when I walk.  I've been thinking about wrapping some yarn around the zipper pulls for a while, to make them quieter.  So today I finally did it, wrapped yarn around all the noisy components.  I'll be going on a walk later today!

catch up day 25 - mending

Catch up for day 25: mending project: sew button back on pants.

cleaning!

Not a very exciting thing today--cleaning the house!  And I didn't even clean that much of the house!  We've been sick around here so things are getting pretty piled up.  Tonight I put away clean dishes (one of my least favorite chores), washed dishes, put away "not dirty enough to wash" clothes, washed a load of laundry, sorted through junk mail, and oiled wooden utensils and cutting boards.  Now it's time for bed!

catch up day 21 - blueberry muffins

Catch up from 2/21: Tonight I made some blueberry muffins loosely following this recipe.  Maybe I should have followed it more closely because they didn't really turn out the way I wanted.  I made the following substitutions: coconut oil for butter, wheat flour for 1 cup for white flour, agave nectar for 2 T brown sugar.  I used a little over a cup of frozen blueberries.  The result is a pretty greasy muffin.  I usually use a mixture of fats when baking, but this time I decided to just use coconut oil, and I think that was my mistake.  The muffins could also use a little lemon or something else to make them a little tart.  I guess my blueberries are too sweet!  I grated some lemon zest and squeezed a little juice over the muffins, we'll see how that works tomorrow!

catch up day 20 - fried potatoes

Catching up from 2/20: Tonight I made some potatoes and turnips fried in goose fat.

catch up day 19 - embroidery pt 1

Embroidery_pattern1

Friday catch up: I started the embroidery piece by drawing out the quote.  I didn't do much refining, I wanted it to look a little rough, imperfect.  I can't decide if I want to do it with a satin stitch or a few rows of outline stitch or what.

groceries

Today I didn't do anything very exciting, I made a list and then went grocery shopping.  We get a lot of our staples at Your Dekalb Farmers Market and that's where I went tonight!  This is a very large warehouse food market and it is exhausting to shop there.  I am exhausted.

catch up day 22 - "indianish" cooking

I still haven't caught up from days 19-21, but yesterday I cooked.  I'm going to call it "Indianish" because I am by no means a master of Indian cooking.  Let's say dinner was in the style of Indian food.  No pictures because we started eating right away!

Rice mix (white basmati, short grain brown, Lundberg "Japonica"--basically, everything we had in the pantry)
Chana (chole) masala (I loosely followed the smitten kitchen recipe)
Green lentil dal (I got the peas from this recipe, cinnamon from this one, and also consulted this recipe)
Sarson da saag (loosely based on this recipe, but I don't think I used the Garam Masala; also, I didn't   cook the greens for very long or mash them, so they retained their texture, for the most part)

I have a friend who worked for an Indian family for a while and she learned how to cook from them.  She's showed me some dishes a couple of times and that's the basic format I use when cooking.  As with many dishes, I don't really "follow" a recipe, but use them as general guides as far as proportions, ingredients, times, etc.

to do update

I didn't make anything this weekend so have some catching up to do this week.  Some things I'd like to work on the rest of the month:

Make a shirt based on the Sew tessuti pattern
Start a triangle quilt, like this one
Embroider this quote

day 17 and 18 - cooking

Yesterday I made two things so I'm going to count that for yesterday and today because I had to work late today and don't feel like doing anything now that I'm home.  First I made a turnip soup.  We had all these turnips and nothing for dinner!  It was a really simple recipe, just turnips, potatoes and a spring onion simmered in weak chicken broth, then pureed.  I added a little salt, pepper, nutmeg and cream to finish.  (That little bundle in the soup?  The potato peels.  I wanted to include their flavor but think potatoes fall apart better if peeled.  I ate the peels after cooking the soup--yum!)

Then I made brownies.  I used this recipe.  They are delicious.  This is kind of like something I did today as I've been eating them all day long.
